Reminders for Coaches,Managers Parents and Players

With the end of season and playoffs very much in sight now your Board of Directors wanted to share a few items that we have been talking about since the beginning of the season and pass on a few timely reminders:

1. The CMHA Board really appreciates everything you do for CMHA. Thank you for your support of community hockey.

2. Mouthguards - now mandatory for all our Rep, House and Female teams, from Novice to Midget, goalies included. You will notice we don't see a penalty assessed for not wearing a mouthguard in Cochrane or CAHL. You will notice that referees from CRA assess penalties regarding improper wearing of a mouthguard (i.e. Patrick Kane style), yet no penalty for not wearing a mouthguard. Mouthguards are like seatbelts - we make our kids use them. We prefer this is policed at the team level and request your continued encouragement that everyone use a mouthguard that reduces incidence of chipped teeth and concussions that are more prevalent without mouthguards. Thanks for pushing this message.

3. Helmets and neck guards - critical pieces of safety equipment that are mandatory. No player goes on the ice without them within CMHA. Please call out poorly fitting or expired helmets and suggest to the parent, for the safety of the child, that they are properly fitted. Neck guards prevent potentially horrific injuries or worse.

4. Game sheets and time keeping - make sure gamesheets are filled out correctly and timekeeping rules like "drop time" are properly administered in our rinks. Opposing teams start to look for technical reasons to protest games at this time of year - let's not provide them an easy reason to replay a game.

5. Dressing room safety and risk management - goalies hands in glove/blocker when they are on the floor getting pads fitted. Restrict movement of players with skates on when others have no skates on. "Skates on means sit down". Two adults minimum in the dressing room with the kids - any combination of parents and/or coaches per CMHA and Hockey Canada's recommended "two deep" method, including those supervised emergency trips to the bathroom in the middle of the game !

6. Suspensions - confused about what to do if your player has received a suspension-grade penalty yet you do not have the ruling? "When in doubt, sit him out!" If you play a player that committed a suspension offense prior to hearing from the league, as a coach you could be suspended indefinitely from coaching. Contact your program Director for support if you have questions.

7. Referees - they are still young and learning like the rest of us. We notice that no-one ever changed a Ref's mind by yelling at them. Remember your kids are watching your conduct and will emulate it on the ice. Your team needs you at the next game and practice - don't hamper the rest of your team's season by having to watch from the lobby.

Our Cochrane teams are overall extremely competitive this year and we hope you are having a lot of fun and success on the ice.
